that the ground for faith was sheer, unquestionable, divine authority. This authority might be expressed in either the Scriptures or in the Church. Thus, Augustine confessed, “I should not believe the gospel except as moved by the authority of the Catholic Church.”1 The authority of Scripture he held in even higher esteem than that of the Church. Because the Scriptures are inspired by God, they are completely free from error and are therefore to be believed absolutely.2 Such a view of authority
